New York’s new law… did you know?
Are you aware of the new law regarding a stopped emergency vehicle or police vehicle?
Drivers must use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and or white emergency lights, or a hazard vehicle that displays amber lights.
Drivers must reduce speed on all roads and highways. On parkways, interstates with multiple lanes, drivers must move from the lane adjacent to the emergency vehicle, unless it is unsafe to do so.
Example: you are headed north on the Sprain Brook Parkway and you see a police cruiser stopped on the right side of the road, with lights flashing. You are required to move from the far right lane to the middle or left lane. Failure to do so is a moving violation subject to fine and points on your license.
