We are experiencing frigid temps here in the NY Metro region. Most of us are faring well, managing to bear the brunt of winter, even if we cannot laugh in its face.
If you lose power at your home (and don’t have a generator), you may be faced with safety issues and the possibility of leaving your home until the thermometer rises and the power is restored. If you find yourself in this situation, please be careful and take the following steps to protect your home from damage while you are away:
- Shut off the main water valve in your home.
- Turn your heating system to off.
- Open faucets to allow water to move freely before it freezes and causes damage.
- If you can, pour antifreeze, windshield washer fluid or even, yes, cheap Vodka, into the toilet tank to prevent cracking.
These steps will not guarantee a frozen pipe will not break, but they may prevent water damage to your house should the power be restored while you are not there.
